What did you see? How did it smell? Did you eat anything as you drove there?  Who were you with? 

Driving through the Black Hills in July with our teenage French visitor. 

As I’ve said before, I can drive through Needles Highway, well really anywhere in the Black Hills of SD, and feel like I’m in the middle of magic.  There are dozens of things to do if you’re a tourist.  My side of the family lives in this area, so I don’t feel like a tourist when we visit.  Despite the fact we go there frequently, I never tire of driving for hours through the area.

This drive, I was with someone who had only been in the U.S. for a few weeks.  In addition, she appreciated the wildness of the place and being outdoors.  Showing her the area was a joy. 

Any time of year, the smell of driving through this part of our country is delicious and earthy.  This was a warm summer night.  We got out and tromped around in various areas.  We drove by a deer who stood posing a few feet from the vehicle while she took a picture.  We got to visit about her impressions after being with us for a few weeks.  The sun was setting as we came to the end of our 2 hour drive. 

Perfect.
